WE MOVED TO BERLIN!
On November 1, 2024, we officially made the leap across the atlantic and moved to Berlin! The first 2.5 months here have been a whirlwind. From tackling the mountains of paperwork (if you’ve ever navigated an international relocation, esp. in Germany - you know) to finding our way around this new city, we’ve already had so many adventures — and there are plenty more to come!

A few highlights from our first couple of months:
We had Thanksgiving dinner at a traditional German tavern. Roasted duck, goulash, cabbage, dumplings, and beer! Somewhat similar to traditional Thanksgiving dinner?
Berlin has over 80 Christmas markets! We spent December going to a few and enjoying plenty of Glühwein. For christmas, we went to snowy bavaria (on the border of austria near salzburg - think: the sound of music). While we both felt homesick over the holidays, Weihnachten (Christmas) in Germany is so festive!
We’ve only had a few mixups from not being able to speak german. For example, Maria got on a tram that was terminating its route and didn’t realize until it got to the end of the line, turned off, and the conductor escorted her off (in german).
we’re moving into our apartment in Prenzlauer Berg (neighborhood of Berlin) this month! We are excited to feel more settled in a more permanent spot with plenty of room to finally unpack our suitcases.
Outside of Germany — We spent a weekend in Milan! Bates’s first trip to Italy and both of our first time in Milano. Highlights: the duomo is breathtaking, we love apertivo culture, and maria wants to learn Italian.
